Project overview

Built for this home, this site and this family.

This Pearl fibreglass pool in Pearcedale was planned around the people who use it, the conditions under it and the home beside it. A Pearl-finish fibreglass pool set into six acres at Pearcedale, planned around an existing deck and finished with honed terrazzo concrete surrounds.

Project decisions

What shaped the solution.

Decision

Concrete, then fibreglass

The owners started with a concrete pool and a custom swim-out. Several consultations later they chose a simpler fibreglass shell that did the same job.

Setting

Six acres to place it

On a property this size the risk is a pool that floats in open ground, so the position was set against the existing deck and the tree line.

Surrounds

Honed terrazzo, not paving

Honed terrazzo concrete surrounds run right to the waterline. The tone sits so close to the Pearl interior that the edge almost disappears.

01 / The starting point

The brief

The owners wanted the property to feel like somewhere they had travelled to. Clean lines, crisp finishes and a pool that could hold the centre of the outdoor life.

Six acres gave them room and took away the easy answers. The pool had to sit at the right scale, close enough to the deck to feel connected to the house.

They began with a concrete pool and a custom swim-out. After several conversations they chose fibreglass, simpler to build and quicker to deliver, for the same result.

Sightlines across the basketball court, the fire pit and the day lounges mattered as much as the pool, so the whole yard could be watched from one spot.

02 / Site and construction

The build

There was no difficult ground here and no unusual access. The work went into planning: where the shell sat relative to the deck, and how the levels met around it.

Depth and dimension were chosen for proportion. On an open rural block a pool that is slightly too small stops reading, and one slightly too large takes over.

Sightlines were set before excavation, so the water would hold visual weight from both the house and the deck rather than only from one of them.

The surrounds were poured in honed terrazzo concrete and run flush to the coping, which is what makes the finished pool look like it was always there.

03 / Shape, finish and use

The design

Pearl was chosen for the interior. It reads pale and soft rather than deep blue, closer to a Mediterranean pool than an Australian backyard one.

The honed terrazzo surrounds carry a similar tone, so the edge between stone and water is quiet. The pool sits inside the landscape rather than being outlined against it.

Four fountain jets arc into the water from the coping. They add movement and sound to a large open site that would otherwise be very still.

A plain rectangle was the right call here. Nothing about the shape will date, which matters on a property meant to feel timeless rather than of its moment.
